Fetterman Pulls Lame Gag on GOP Over Impeachment Inquiry, but Decorum Gets the Last Laugh

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) is continuing his crusade against Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), who is under federal indictment for charges related to bribery and violations of the Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA). He recently introduced a resolution that would deny Menendez access to classified information and briefings.

The move comes as Menendez faces charges that he worked on behalf of the Egyptian government without registering as a foreign agent.

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., introduced a resolution on Thursday that would strip Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey of his committee assignments and bar his access to classified information and briefings.

The resolution specifically targets senators indicted for crimes affecting national security, and would bar them from serving on congressional committees, receiving classified information, submitting spending requests for appropriation bills, or using official funds for international travel.

While the resolution does not name Menendez directly, Fetterman appeared to take aim at the New Jersey Democrat, who has been accused of accepting bribes from a foreign government and conspiring to act as a foreign agent.

In a statement, Fetterman noted that “when you find gold bars stuffed in a mattress, the jokes write themselves. But our national security isn’t funny, it’s often life or death.”

The proposed resolution comes a day after Menendez attended a classified briefing on Ukraine held by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. When questioned about his attendance, the Senator said, “I have my security credentials, and an accusation is just that, it’s not proof of anything.”

Naturally, Menendez has publicly expressed his criticism of the proposed measure, referring to it as a “publicity stunt.” He argued that the resolution neglects due process, the presumption of innocence, and the rule of law. “Instead of focusing on generating clickbait, he should channel his efforts toward legislating and delivering results for the people of Pennsylvania,” Menendez said.

The New Jersey lawmaker has denied the charges against him and pleaded not guilty.

Last month, Fetterman became the first senator to call for Menendez’s resignation in light of the bribery charges against him. He went so far as to suggest that the Senate should vote to expel him. However, other Democrats in the upper chamber have criticized Menendez but stopped short of urging him to resign, arguing that they should wait until the trial is concluded.

Federal investigators, upon executing a search warrant, found nearly half a million dollars in cash and gold bars that were allegedly given to him by three businessmen who are also under indictment.

In a recent development, it was revealed that Menendez allegedly attempted to install an ally as a U.S. attorney to help one of his friends who was facing a different indictment.

An old friend and political patron was facing federal prosecution. And as New Jersey’s senior senator, Menendez was in a position to help, by recommending the next leader of the office overseeing the case.

In early 2021, Menendez urged President Joe Biden to nominate a lawyer he knew well as the state’s next U.S. attorney: Esther Suarez, a politically connected prosecutor in his home county. It did not go as planned.

Menendez has not only resisted calls to step down from his position, he has also indicated that he plans to seek reelection.
