Judge Bert Guy resigns after DUI arrest at Wacko's strip club in Jacksonville

Judge Bert Guy Steps Down Following DUI Incident at Jacksonville Venue

In a recent incident stirring the Brunswick Judicial Circuit, former judge Robert Guy found himself in legal hot water following a DUI-related crash at Wacko’s Gentlemen’s Club in Jacksonville. The incident has resulted in his resignation from the bench.

Judge Robert “Bert” Guy Jr., who served the Brunswick Judicial Circuit encompassing Glynn, Camden, Appling, Jeff Davis, and Wayne counties, stepped down after the accident. His resignation was confirmed on Thursday, October 16, by Governor Brian Kemp’s office, which acknowledged receipt and acceptance of his decision to vacate the role.

Reflecting on his tenure, Guy expressed deep gratitude for his time serving the circuit. “It has been an honor and privilege to serve the 5 County Brunswick Judicial Circuit,” he stated. He further extended appreciation toward his judicial colleagues throughout Georgia, commending his staff and courthouse personnel along with the dedicated attorneys for their passionate advocacy.

The incident in question unfolded when the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash reported around 2 a.m. at Wacko’s, situated on Emerson Street. According to the arrest report, a valet witnessed Guy, behind the wheel of a black Mercedes, reversing into a parked truck, causing damage to its bumper.

The valet recounted that Guy, appearing inebriated, attempted to leave the scene but was unable to do so, requiring assistance to return his vehicle to a parking spot. The owner of the damaged truck informed authorities that Guy had offered $500 in an attempt to settle the matter on the spot, indicating an effort to sidestep the legal repercussions of his actions.

A valet driver told police he saw Guy, driving a black Mercedes, back into another person’s parked truck and damage their front bumper. He said that Guy tried to drive away after talking to the other driver, but was too drunk and needed to be guided back into a parking space. The crash victim told police Guy attempted to give him $500 to smooth things over.

The reporting officer said they talked to Guy, whose car keys were being held by employees, and could “immediately smell” the strong odor of alcohol. He was also observed swaying, with bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, and failed the field sobriety tests.

After arriving at the jail, Guy was also arrested for allegedly refusing to perform a breathalyzer test and was released on bond later that day.

Duval County court records show the former judge has since pleaded not guilty to all three misdemeanor charges.

Prior to his arrest and resignation, Guy also served as president of the Council of Superior Court Judges of Georgia.
