KAMALA Harris has been described as elitist and widely ridiculed online after walking into the Met Gala for the first time.

The ex-vice-president’s appearance at the glitzy bash comes as she continues to face outrage over her cop escort during a recent trip.

Trump was previously a regular guest at the gala.

Gala chair and Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour said in a 2017 interview, however, that he would never be invited again.

She wore a monochromatic black and white gown that sailed down to the ground.

The color-blocking effect was eye-catching and in-keeping with the theme of Superfine: Tailoring Black Style for the 2025 fashion event of the year.

Wearing her mid-length hair down and framing her face, she added some turquoise earrings that peeked out from her hair.

Her shoes were not visible due to the length of the silky frock, with the dress being the ultimate statement and main event.

Harris’ outfit was designed by IB Kamara.

But, Harris was widely criticized over her appearance at the event.

She was accused of being out of touch.

“Kamala at the Met Gala is just more of the same,” one critic scoffed.

“Elitist pandering with zero substance.

“Americans want results, not fashion statements and speeches that fall flat.”

In an X post, another described the Gala as snooty and elite.

“It’s out of touch and zero substance,” they railed.

Tickets for the Gala are priced around $75,000 per individual, drawing A-list celebrities like Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Sabrina Carpenter, and Lewis Hamilton to attend.

They claimed being out of touch was one of the reasons why the Democrats lost last year’s presidential election.

X users also accused Harris of not reading the room, while sarcastically quipping the Democrats do not represent the working class anymore.

How do you get an invite to the Met Gala?

The Met Gala is renowned as one of the most prestigious fashion events each year. However, gaining entry to this annual charity event isn’t easy. So, what does it take to secure an invitation to this high-profile affair?

Invites to the charity event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute are rare and they do not let you get in for free.

According to the New York Times, individual tickets have a price tag of $75,000, while tables cost $350,000. All invitees must receive approval from Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour.

So, the majority of guests are invited by major fashion houses and organisations with celebrities usually able to attend for free on behalf of brands who will foot the bill.

Designers like Gucci, Prada, and Louis Vuitton will usually buy tables and fill them up with A-listers from Hollywood, sports, art, and social media.

Many who get invites are brand ambassadors, major figures for hot campaigns, or stars that companies want to be linked to.

Social media stars are most likely to be invited by major platforms like Meta and Instagram, bringing in TikTok stars and other huge celebrities – but everyone needs to be over the age of 18.

Ultimately, anyone with a major platform who it willing to pay the price of a table and who is approved by Vogue’s chief will be able to attend.

Those who are not part of the elite may also be able to get their way into to exclusive event via volunteering and work.

Jobs or internships in production, public relations, catering, communications, media, and in the museum could also secure you a space behind the scenes at the Gala.

Harris’ outfit was shared on Vogue Magazine’s Instagram account, with one critic claiming she looked like the Disney villain Cruella de Vil because of the black and white look.

Harris’ controversial debut comes after she was slammed for using NYPD cops during a weekend visit to one of New York City’s most expensive bars.

Curtis Sliwa, who is running to be the next mayor of New York City, said it was an “outrage” Harris was given a police escort for the trip.

“Secret Service is fine; NYPD, no. NYPD needs to protect the people, we don’t have enough of them,” he told Daily Mail.

“She’s going to a bar to enjoy herself, and she’s got an army of security paid for by us, not her.”

Meanwhile, it’s not known what Harris’ political future may hold.

Since leaving the White House, she has been tight-lipped on her ambitions.

She appeared at a San Francisco event last week and bizarrely referred to elephants mid-speech.

Harris was widely mocked after viewers failed to miss that particular moment.

She could run to be the Democratic Party’s candidate for the governor of California.

Incumbent Gavin Newsom cannot run for another term.

Or, she could wait and throw her name into the hat to be the Democratic Party’s next presidential candidate.

But, the 2028 field is set to be crowded.

She could face competition from Newsom, or Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Senator Cory Booker and firebrand congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have been touted as potential candidates.
