In a notable public appearance, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was seen with his daughter, Ju Ae, during a New Year’s Day visit to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun. This site holds deep symbolic significance as it serves to honor the founding leaders of the nation.
Photographs released by the state news agency KCNA depict Ju Ae standing prominently between her parents in the main hall of the mausoleum. This visual has sparked considerable discussion among analysts regarding her possible future within the regime.
Over the past three years, Ju Ae has increasingly been featured in state media. This has led analysts and South Korea’s intelligence agency to speculate that she might be groomed as a potential successor to Kim Jong Un.
This appearance aligns with a longstanding tradition in North Korea where Kim Jong Un visits the mausoleum on important dates and anniversaries. Such visits are designed to reinforce the continuity and legitimacy of the nation’s dynastic rule, particularly in its nuclear-armed context.

Accompanying Kim Jong Un at the visit were his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and their daughter, Kim Ju Ae. The family’s presence at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun was part of the New Year celebrations in Pyongyang, North Korea, on January 1, as reported by KCNA via Reuters.
While North Korea has not officially disclosed Ju Ae’s age, it is generally believed that she is around 12 or 13 years old, adding another layer of intrigue to her increasing visibility in state affairs.
After being publicly introduced in North Korea in 2022, Ju Ae made her first public appearance outside of her home country while accompanying her father on a trip to Beijing in September, his first visit to China in years, a move analysts said may signal her role as North Korea’s heir-in-waiting.
Ju Ae’s existence was inadvertently revealed by retired NBA star Dennis Rodman over a decade ago in an interview with The Guardian.

Rodman told reporters during a 2013 trip to Pyongyang he had “held the baby Ju Ae,” while calling Kim Jong Un a “good dad.”
Parenting expert Kirsty Ketley told Fox News Digital in September that placing Ju Ae in the global spotlight at a young age could have lasting consequences.

“She’s being shaped into a role rather than being supported to figure out who she is as an individual, and that pressure could have a huge impact on her mental health,” she said.
