CHICAGO (WLS) — A 27-year-old man was wounded in a shooting near several popular bars in the Lakeview neighborhood Monday morning, Chicago police said.

Jujuan Hicks, the shooting victim, said an acquaintance of his ex tried to run him over in a car before shooting him. They began arguing at around 1:17 a.m. near the corner of Roscoe and Halsted streets before he saw the man get a car.

“We basically tried to walk off from it. He swerved and tried to hit us. He went down the block, did a u-turn, and that’s when he shot,” Hicks said. “The moment I was shot, I didn’t feel it. But, as I started to walk more, both of my legs started to weaken.”

Hicks was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in fair condition, police said. He left the hospital in a wheelchair with a bullet lodged in his leg.

“People like that should not be carrying anything because I could potentially be dead right now,” Hicks said.

Hicks said the shooting happened after a prior confrontation.

“Two weeks ago, we were fighting in the club,” Hicks said.

He said the alleged shooter drove away, leaving him with injuries that could be healed but the trauma is difficult to shake off.

“I don’t feel safe,” Hicks said. “I just hope they get him, and it doesn’t take no two weeks to bring him in… I’m just happy that it was not as bad, but I mean, I still have to deal with this? And just try to recover.”

Chicago shootings: 27 shot, 5 fatally, in weekend violence, police say

The bars in the area were busy at the time of the shooting, with many celebrating Pride Month in Lakeview. Large crowds gathered in the area after the shooting. Residents said the violence is unnerving.
“I’ve been hearing about this for the past three months, especially in this area all the way to Lincoln Park, that while it’s shocking, it’s like, I don’t even know what to say anymore,” neighborhood resident Ana Martin Del Campo said.

There have been several shootings in the Lakeview and North Halsted area in the past several months, sparking concern and calls for increased patrols in the area.

“It is concerning, the rise in gun violence, not only in the neighborhood but throughout the entire city,” neighborhood resident Colleen McClain said.

One neighbor said the shooting didn’t come as a surprise.

“And my first reaction was another one, and I think that tells the story right there of it’s progressively happening more and more frequently,” the neighbor said.
The corner is known as a nightlife hotspot and is saturated with cameras mounted on bars and other businesses.

Carl Meinke is visiting his daughter from Florida, reminding her to stay on guard.

“Just to always be vigilant and when she first moved here years ago, I bought her a little can of the spray, but mostly to be vigilant,” Meinke said.

Police have not released any suspect descriptions.
