JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As powerful storms swept through the region on Sunday afternoon, two homes in Jacksonville were hit by lightning, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department reported.

The First Coast News Most Accurate Weather Team says there were hundreds of lightning strikes across Jacksonville Sunday afternoon.

One lightning strike hit a home on Highland Glen Way, and another hit a home on River Knoll Drive, according to JFRD. 

The strikes caused fires at both homes, but no injuries were reported.

Officials said the strike at the River Knoll Drive home hit the attic, leaving behind a hole in the roof. 

A neighbor told First Coast News they saw smoke coming from the top of the home and large flames coming through a window.

If a lightning strike hits your home, a JFRD official recommends assessing your surroundings before leaving. Avoid rushing out immediately and inspect for any signs of smoldering from the affected area before stepping outside.
