CHICAGO (WLS) — A woman shot by a federal agent on Chicago’s Southwest Side Saturday morning now faces charges, along with another person, in connection with a vehicle-ramming incident that occurred moments before the shooting, according to federal prosecutors.

Marimar Martinez, 30, and Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, 21, are accused of using their vehicles to hit a car carrying three U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents near West 39th Street and South Kedzie Avenue in Brighton Park.

Prosecutors stated that Martinez and Ruiz proceeded to trap the agents’ car using their vehicles. With his car immobilized, the CPB agent driving got out and fired around five shots at Martinez using his service weapon.

The Department of Homeland Security reported on Saturday that Martinez was carrying a semi-automatic weapon and noted that 10 vehicles surrounded the agents’ car.

Martinez fled the scene but was later found by paramedics at a repair shop about a mile away. She was transported to a hospital, where she received treatment for her gunshot injuries.

Ruiz also drove away, but law enforcement officers located him and his vehicle at a gas station about a half-block away, the prosecutors said.

Martinez and Ruiz, both of Chicago, are in custody, charged with assaulting, impeding, and interfering with a federal law enforcement officer.

DHS also said Martinez was named in a CBP intelligence bulletin last week for allegedly doxxing agents online.

Protesters, authorities clash on Southwest Side

The incident led to prolonged confrontations between protestors and federal officers, who used tear gas, rubber bullets, and other chemical agents multiple times during the clashes.

Sara Barrera was filming the scene, shortly after shots were fired. She says when her boyfriend followed orders to step back, federal agents threw him to the ground.

“He had his hand behind his back and they started saying he had a gun, but he was just scratching his back, and they all pointed guns toward him and ran towards him,” Barrera said.

Barrera shared photos of her boyfriend being taken away on a stretcher. She says she was not allowed to see him at the hospital, adding that federal authorities said he was in custody and would be charged after being treated.

“They’re doing way too much,” Barrera said. “They’re not even going for what they came here to do anymore… that was not an immigration issue.”

6 arrested during protests near Broadview ICE facility

Meanwhile, six people people were arrested as demonstrators and officers clashed near the Broadview Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility on Saturday.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said those arrested are facing charges such as resisting, obstructing and simple battery.

ABC7 cameras were on the scene when Illinois State Police detained at least four people.

The Broadview demonstrations came after Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced that President Donald Trump had authorized the deployment of 300 National Guard members to Chicago.

Broadview leaders, concerned about the possible deployment, filed an emergency motion on Saturday, seeking the removal of the fence erected by federal authorities around the ICE facility amid ongoing demonstrations.

The village, which has called the fence illegal and a safety hazard, asked a judge to grant the motion pending a Tuesday hearing on the village’s lawsuit against DHS.

DHS responded to that motion in its own court filing, saying there is no need for a hearing before Tuesday and adding that there could be a settlement on Monday.
