Fort Stewart active shooter | Live updates

A U.S. official said the suspected shooter is an Army sergeant and he is in custody, CNN reports.

FORT STEWART, Ga. — Base officials at Fort Stewart in Georgia have confirmed that an “active shooter incident” occurred on Wednesday morning, resulting in five soldiers being shot. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, as per a U.S. official.

According to CNN, a law enforcement official has identified the suspected shooter as an Army sergeant. The male suspect has been detained, as stated by the official.

This is no active threat to the community.

The incident took place in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. Wounded soldiers initially received treatment on-site and were later transferred to Winn Army Community Hospital for further care. Some of these soldiers have since been moved to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah for additional treatment, as reported by hospital officials.

Officials said law enforcement was dispatched to the incident at 10:56 a.m. and the shooter was apprehended at 11:35 a.m. 

The conditions of the soldiers were not immediately available, nor was the shooter’s identity.

Fort Stewart, located east of the Mississippi River, is the largest Army post in its region. It accommodates thousands of soldiers from the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division along with their families, according to the Associated Press.

The base is located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Georgia.

2:28 p.m. | Brig. Gen. John Lubas, who commands the 3rd Infantry Division and Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield, is scheduled to hold a press briefing on the shooting at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“The incident at Ft. Stewart in Georgia today is a tragic act of violence. Alisha and I extend our prayers to those injured, their families, and the entire Ft. Stewart community during this difficult time. We are also grateful to the first responders for their efforts in providing security and medical aid.”

1:52 p.m. | U.S. official: No fatalities in shooting, the shooter is a soldier

ABC News reports the shooter is a male soldier, according to a U.S. official. The official said there were no fatalities reported, and the five wounded soldiers are currently receiving medical care.

An emergency dispatch request for mutual aid shows that crews were called to Building 8420 for the 2nd Brigade. 

The building is in the area of Vanguard Road. Maps show this is near the Dental Clinic 4, the Johnson Gym, the North Troop Medical Center and dining facilities.
