Fetterman: The Democrats 'Own the Shutdown,' This Is an 'Absolute Fail'

During a Sunday segment on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania expressed his view that Democrats are responsible for the government shutdown, calling it a “failure.”

Host Jake Tapper highlighted the impact of the shutdown, noting that 42 million Americans, including 2 million in Pennsylvania, will not receive their food stamp or SNAP benefits this month due to a lapse in funding. He pointed out that the White House blames Democrats for the shutdown, while Democrats argue the Trump administration is not utilizing contingency funds for SNAP, allegedly pressuring Democrats. Tapper asked Fetterman for his perspective and who he holds accountable.

Fetterman responded, expressing his deep concern over the loss of SNAP benefits for millions. He stated his steadfast opposition to shutting down the government, emphasizing that Democrats should take responsibility for the shutdown. He acknowledged their motives, such as addressing tax credits, which he supports and has consistently voted for. However, he cannot endorse a scenario where 42 million Americans face food insecurity, stressing that reopening the government would resolve these issues and ensure people are paid.

Fetterman concluded by labeling the situation as a “complete failure” and expressed embarrassment over the inability to maintain government operations.
