In a disturbing incident that has shocked the local community, law enforcement officials have detained a man suspected of a heinous crime against a 74-year-old woman in Long Island. The suspect allegedly broke into her residence and perpetrated a sexual assault last week.
Jawarren Booker, a 29-year-old resident of Ridge, faces serious charges including first-degree rape and burglary, as reported by Suffolk County police. The attack occurred in the early hours of Friday morning at the woman’s Holbrook apartment.
According to investigators, Booker gained entry to the victim’s home by climbing through a window between 6:15 and 7:15 a.m. He then confronted the woman while she was seated on her couch, subsequently subjecting her to a brutal physical and sexual assault before fleeing the scene. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina remarked on the severity of the crime, noting it could “cause you to question your faith in humanity.”
After the assailant fled, the victim managed to contact emergency services, and she was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Following a rigorous investigation and manhunt, Booker was apprehended on Tuesday morning in the Bronx. Commissioner Catalina, speaking at a press conference held at the police headquarters in Yaphank, praised the extensive efforts that led to the arrest but did not divulge the specifics of how Booker was identified as a suspect.
Booker was arrested Tuesday morning in the Bronx following an “extensive investigation and search,” Catalina said Wednesday at a press conference at police headquarters in Yaphank. He did not provide details on how investigators identified Booker as a suspect.
According to the commissioner, Booker had been living in the same Holbrook apartment complex, but it’s not yet known whether he knew the victim.
Booker was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.
Online court records show that Booker has a criminal record but has never been charged with a sex crime.
