CLEVELAND — More than 30 people are being provided emergency shelter by the Red Cross after a fire quickly tore through an Elyria apartment complex Friday evening, causing nearly $1,000,000 in damages.
Elyria Fire Department crews were called to 1452 West River Road North at around 5:15 p.m. and arrived to find heavy fire on a second-floor balcony of an apartment, according to a release. The fire rapidly spread to other apartments in the complex due to high winds.
The fire took over an hour to for crews to get under control. Crews have deemed the apartment complex uninhabitable. Officials estimate the fire caused around $800,000 in damage to the structure and $100,000 in damage to the contents of the building.
No injuries were reported. Crews remained on scene for over three hours with assistance from the Elyria Township, Eaton Township, Lorain and Sheffield Village fire departments. Carlisle Township’s fire department helped the EFD cover additional calls while crews battled the blaze.
