Luigi Mangione complains of double jeopardy in courtroom outburst

On Friday, Luigi Mangione expressed frustration over the prospect of facing consecutive trials concerning the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, arguing it amounted to double jeopardy.

As Mangione was led out of the courtroom in New York, he exclaimed, “It’s essentially the same trial twice. One plus one equals two. This is double jeopardy by any reasonable measure.”

His lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, echoed his concerns, asserting that the concept of double jeopardy was being unfairly wielded against her client.

This statement came after a brief hearing focused on scheduling the state and federal trials related to Thompson’s shooting.

After extensive discussions with both prosecution and defense teams, Judge Gregory Carro announced that the state trial would commence on June 8, with the possibility of postponement to September 8 if a federal trial appeal causes delays.

Agnifilo objected to the timeline, arguing that her client was being placed in an “untenable” position and that the defense would not be prepared by the June 8 date.

“Mr. Mangione is being put in an untenable situation,” Agnifilo said. “This is a tug-of-war between two different prosecution offices.”
