Man pleads guilty to 2024 attempted murder of 2 undercover JSO detectives

On September 20, 2024, while investigating narcotics on Florida Avenue, two detectives from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office were fired upon by Ja’Von Brown, who discharged his weapon no fewer than 18 times, according to Sheriff Waters.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In a Duval County courtroom on Monday, a Jacksonville resident admitted to attempting to murder two undercover detectives associated with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Ja’Von Brown, 24, pleaded guilty to two attempted murder charges. His sentencing date will be set on Oct. 13.

Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters, on October 3, 2024, revealed the arrests of Brown and 23-year-old Anthony Trotter, both connected to the attempted murder from September 20, 2024.

During their investigation in the 3000 block of Florida Avenue that afternoon, the detectives encountered a hail of at least 18 bullets fired by Brown towards their vehicle, Waters recounted. The shots penetrated the vehicle, barely sparing the detectives inside. Sheriff Waters described the event as an “ambush.”

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported that Trotter served as the getaway driver. They further stated that Brown likely targeted the detectives under the mistaken belief that they were rival gang members, rather than law enforcers.

Brown and Trotter were arrested six days after the shooting.

According to court documents, Trotter admitted guilt to a charge of being an accessory after the fact on September 8. He is expected to return to court on October 8 to determine his sentencing date.
