Man shot in the leg during fight in Pelham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — One man is dead while another is in the hospital after being shot in the leg following an alleged fight in Pelham Tuesday.

On Tuesday at approximately 8:13 p.m., officers from the Pelham Police Department responded to a residence situated in the 500 block of Grand Reserve Drive. Upon their arrival, they discovered that 78-year-old Paul Tooson had died, while 51-year-old Saxon Benison was injured with a gunshot wound to his leg.

The Pelham Police Department released a statement indicating that their initial investigation suggests that a dispute between the two men led to one of them pulling out a gun and shooting the other in the leg. Further altercation over the firearm caused it to be fired again.

Benison was taken to a nearby hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

The case remains under investigation.
