A MAN has been stunned to find out he was married without his knowledge after a surprise arrived on his doorstep.
When he opened the unexpected package, he found a marriage certificate confirming his vows in a secret wedding that he hadn’t even attended.
He found out unexpectedly that his former girlfriend, Kristin Marie Spearman, had married him without his consent by persuading a pastor to approve the marriage certificate.
Spearman, 36, is now being held on a felony charge of third-degree stalking.
The 42-year-old, who has opted to stay anonymous, informed the police that he was in a relationship with Spearman and that they had plans to wed.
The former couple got a marriage license in their home state of Texas on June 2.
They then called off the wedding when they broke up over an argument.
But the ex-bride-to-be decided to still go forward with her big day without a groom at the end of the aisle.
Spearman convinced a reverend to certify their marriage without the groom being present, according to Beverly Hills Police Chief Kory Martin.
Martin said she then went to the County Clerk’s Office and filed the marriage certificate.
This unsuspecting husband realized he was legally married when he received a gift package from Bath & Body Works on his doorstep in Beverly Hills, Texas, as reported by CBS affiliate KWTX-TV.
The box contained a picture of Spearman holding their marriage license, Martin said.
He dug further into the package to find a copy of their marriage certificate, which was filed with the McLennan County Clerk’s Office.
“At first, we were really considering that it may be some forged documents,” Martin said, according to Fox affiliate KWKT.
“However, once we made contact with the reverend who ended up signing the actual ceremony, showing that they were unified, he basically solidified the fact that, yeah, the groom was not present when that occurred.”
Martin declined to release the name of the pastor who officiated the ceremony.
Spearman was arrested at her home.
She was booked into the McLennan County Jail. It’s unclear if she’s been released.
Martin said there are multiple steps for the groom to take to sort through the bizarre situation.
“I’ve talked to the victim, and he’s going through a significant process to try to have to fix this at this point, and so that’s a whole ‘nother situation,” Martin said.
He said the groom is concerned about how the marriage will affect his safety and his property.
“It’s looking like the process is going to be quite lengthy,” he said.
