In Hollywood, a fresh reimagining of a classic thriller is making waves. “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” originally captivating audiences over three decades ago, is set to return with a modern twist.
According to Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who stars in the film, this version diverges significantly from its predecessor. “It’s really about bringing the story into a contemporary context,” she explained, highlighting the updated themes and setting.
Winstead portrays a mother in search of a nanny, ultimately hiring a young woman played by Maika Monroe. While the storyline retains the suspenseful undercurrents of the original, the narrative twist is distinctly new.
“We’ve discussed how thrilling and enjoyable the energy of ’90s thrillers was,” Winstead remarked. “This version maintains that excitement but is firmly rooted in our present-day realities.”
Monroe, embracing the challenge of her role, shared her enthusiasm: “I was eager for something fresh and this part offered a completely different experience. It was an absolute joy to work on.”
Director Michelle Garza Cervera has taken on the task of reinventing this beloved film, infusing it with her unique vision while preserving its original essence.
“Just the idea of re-making that movie was so intimidating. So at first, I was really reluctant, you know, because it’s touching such an iconic and legendary film,” said Cervera. “When I know that I could build a whole movie that could stand on its own, that had its own identity, I was, like, OK, I could work on this project.”
“At the end of the day, you’re still going to be totally creeped out and terrified, which is what you want from a film like this,” said Winstead.
“The Hand that Rocks the Cradle” is streaming now on Hulu.
The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Hulu and this ABC station.
