MOSCOW, Russia — An intense earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 occurred early Saturday near the eastern coastline of Russia’s Kamchatka region, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake’s epicenter was 111.7 kilometers (69.3 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and had a depth of 39 kms, according to the USGS.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damages.

Tsunami waves reaching up to 1 meter above normal tide levels were possible in some Russian coastal areas. However, the NWS tsunami warning system indicated minimal risk for Hawaii, Japan, and other Pacific islands. 

An earlier earthquake measured at 8.8 magnitude had hit the same location on July 30, causing tsunami warnings and advisories across a wide area of the Pacific, including Alaska, Hawaii, and the U.S. West Coast. On July 20, 2025, Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula experienced five strong quakes, with the largest registering a magnitude of 7.4.
