Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez stuns colleagues with awkward comment in Toronto loss

Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez had an odd choice of phrasing on Friday night while speaking during an at-bat.

As the Blue Jays’ Alejandro Kirk was at the plate at the top of the second inning, Hernandez was speaking generally about hitting when he offered some strange advice.

‘You want to always be erect when you make contact,’ the two-time World Series champion said.

His wisdom apparently did not resonate with co-commentators Gary Cohen and Ron Darling, as there was a long silence afterwards.

After Kirk fouled a ball off his bat, Hernandez clarified, ‘like a telephone pole.’

The Mets struggled at the plate on Friday night, though, as they were shut out by Toronto en route to a 3-0 loss at Citi Field.

For the visitors, George Springer and Daulton Varsho homered in the first and ninth inning respectively as ex-Met Chris Bassitt pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings for the Blue Jays.

The loss comes after a promising three-game home sweep of the Phillies for the Mets.

New York is now 30-28 this season, good for second in the NL East.
