URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Urbana City Council is preparing to vote on a handful of initiatives to fight against homelessness in the area.

On the agenda for Monday’s meeting are nine resolutions, accumulating to over $1 million dedicated to several projects. Earlier this week, WCIA covered the potential influx of funds heading to C-U at Home, a nonprofit focused on aiding people experiencing homelessness in setting and achieving goals for improved futures. The organization is currently working on renovating a new mid-barrier shelter.

A funding agreement with the City of Champaign was approved on Tuesday, allowing up to $408,555. Should Urbana’s vote on Monday be favorable, an additional $320,000 could be contributed to these resources.

“For us as an organization, this indicates that both the City of Champaign and the City of Urbana understand the importance of addressing homelessness within the community,” expressed Melissa Courtwright, Executive Director of C-U at Home. “Seeing Urbana support this project significantly impacts both us and the community.”

Other entities with funds under discussion include Strides Shelter, Champaign County Health Care Consumers, and Cunningham Township CARES. The most substantial proposal on Monday’s agenda is for Hope Village, amounting to $1 million, with construction of the tiny home village having commenced at the end of July.
