Human remains discovered in Tasmania have been conclusively identified as belonging to a Belgian backpacker who went missing nearly three years ago during a solo hike.

Thirty-one-year-old Celine Cremer disappeared in June 2023 while exploring the Philosopher Falls area in Waratah. Her whereabouts remained unknown until January, when a volunteer searcher found human remains approximately two hours from where her belongings were previously located on the island.

Tasmanian police confirmed on Friday that forensic testing identified the remains as those of Cremer.

“After almost three years of endless waiting, we finally have answers,” wrote her sister, Amelie Cremer, in a heartfelt Facebook post. “Today, our hearts are heavy, yet we find solace knowing that Celine can finally return home. She will be able to rest in peace, surrounded by the love that has always been with her.”

“Celine, you were never forgotten,” Amelie added. “Not for a single day, not for a single second.”

The case had puzzled authorities, with the only lead emerging in December 2025 when Cremer’s possessions were discovered.

Then in January, searcher Jarrod Boys found the remains.

“The bones that I saw were just lying on top of a pile of soil and stones,” he told reporters at the time. “I guess I went into shock. I was very overwhelmed. I’m not a particularly emotional guy, but, yeah, it was definitely an emotional experience for me.”
