LOS ANGELES — Mookie Betts, a future inductee into baseball’s Hall of Fame, has seamlessly evolved from being the sport’s premier right fielder to its top shortstop, a feat that has not garnered the recognition it truly deserves. Betts’ unique achievement stands unmatched and is unlikely to be replicated.
Perhaps the lack of widespread acclaim for Betts’ positional shift stems from his well-established reputation as a versatile athlete. As his teammate Clayton Kershaw notes, Betts excels in various pursuits, including bowling and pingpong, alongside his baseball prowess.
Having already secured six Gold Glove awards as an outfielder, Betts has been honored with the Fielding Bible award for his exceptional performance at shortstop. He is a strong contender for the Gold Glove in this category as well, which would place him alongside Darin Erstad as the only players to have won Gold Gloves in both the outfield and infield. Notably, Erstad’s infield accolade was at first base, a position offering a different set of challenges.

This year has been remarkable for several superstar athletes, with Betts prominently among them for his extraordinary accomplishments.
