Pretrial hearing for Luigi Mangione to resume Monday after court releases new evidence in CEO murder case

NEW YORK — Luigi Mangione, the man charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is scheduled for another appearance in court today. The session will focus on whether crucial evidence will be admissible in his impending murder trial.

The proceedings are centered around evidence collected at the time of Mangione’s arrest. His defense team argues that some items were seized before he was informed of his rights, potentially violating legal protocols.

Recently, the court approved the release of additional evidence. Among these items is a piece of paper bearing a to-do list, which prosecutors claim is directly connected to Thompson’s murder. Additionally, a photograph of a folding knife, reportedly found in Mangione’s possession, has been presented by the prosecution.

Another item in question is a Greyhound bus ticket issued under the name Sam Dawson, which prosecutors identify as one of several aliases allegedly used by Mangione. Upon arrest, Mangione reportedly claimed his name was Mark Rosario, aligning with a counterfeit New Jersey driver’s license he had.

Throughout this pretrial hearing, Mangione’s legal representatives are pushing back against the manner in which this evidence was obtained, seeking to have it excluded from the trial.

The defense is particularly focused on dismissing a ghost gun and a journal discovered in Mangione’s backpack. Prosecutors contend that the journal contains hostile writings aimed at for-profit health insurance companies.

Lawyers for Mangione claim he was not read his Miranda Rights before he was searched, after his arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Prosecutors say under Pennsylvania law, officers had a legal right to search the backpack.

Mangione’s arrest came after he was spotted at a McDonald’s. The 911 call was released for the first time last week in court:

McDonald’s Manager: “I have a customer here that some other customers were suspicious of, that he looked like the CEO shooter from New York.”

911 Dispatcher: “You said black jacket?”

McDonald’s Manager: “Uh huh. A tan beanie.”

911 Dispatcher: “OK.”

McDonald’s Manager: “And like the blue medical mask.”

Mangione was last in court on Thursday. Proceedings in his ongoing pretrial hearing were canceled on Friday due to Mangione feeling sick.
