It’s a heartbreaking “game over” for Mythic Quest fans as Apple TV+ has canceled the show after four seasons.
On Friday, Megan Ganz, David Hornsby, and Rob McElhenney, the show’s executive producers, revealed that the series would not continue with a fifth season. However, a final surprise awaits the fans. Apple TV+ will launch a re-edited version of the Season 4 finale, available on the streaming service around mid-April.
The creators expressed their gratitude to the fans and Apple TV+ for five wonderful years of laughter, ensuring a conclusion to what will now serve as their series finale. The previous Season 4 finale concluded with a suspenseful kiss between the main characters, Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) and Ian (McElhenney), a moment anticipated over four seasons. The conclusion of the new version remains a mystery.
“Endings are challenging. Yet, after four remarkable seasons, ‘Mythic Quest’ is reaching its conclusion,” Ganz, Hornsby, and McElhenney stated together. “We take pride in the show and the universe we crafted—and are immensely thankful to every cast and crew member who dedicated their passion to it. To all our fans, we appreciate you joining us on this journey.”
The trio continued, “To our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning. Because endings are hard, with Apple’s blessing, we made one final update to our last episode—so we could say goodbye, instead of just game over.”
When Decider sat down with Nicdao in March to discuss the Season 4 finale, she indicated that they had shot at least two versions of Poppy and Ian’s ending — one of which ended with the jaw-dropping kiss between the pair — and another that goes past that moment. It’s unclear if the unaired footage will be part of the newly edited series finale.
“What I think is really fun is we actually shot about a page more than what you see in the finale, of the moments right after the kiss happens. That was honestly partly to inform those moments of reaction that you get from Ian and Poppy right after the kiss,” she said.
Mythic Quest originally debuted on Apple TV+ in 2020 and began airing its fourth and final season in January. The show also stars Danny Pudi, Jessie Ennis, Ashly Burch, and Imani Hakim.
All of Mythic Quest is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
