DeKALB, Ill. (WLS) — A man who killed a DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputy in a crash last year was sentenced to 14 years in prison Tuesday.

Musil had been with the Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office for five years.

She was an Army veteran and mother of three.

“I am disappointed that the law restricted Judge Buick to sentencing Nathan Sweeney to just 14 years. He took a police officer’s life, and the law should have allowed for a harsher punishment. Fourteen years for ending Christina’s life is insufficient and shows that our legislature has once again let down the people of Illinois. Judge Buick rightly noted that Sweeney endangered the public by repeatedly driving under the influence with a commercial driver’s license,” stated DeKalb County State’s Attorney Riley Oncken. “I hope this sentence serves as a warning to those considering driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. I also wish it motivates those battling addiction to seek assistance. If Nathan Sweeney had prioritized his sobriety and chosen not to use drugs again, Christina Musil would still be alive, and he wouldn’t be facing imprisonment.”
