NYC graduation rates down by largest year-over-year percentage in 20 years

New data from the Department of Education indicates that New York City experienced its steepest decline in graduation rates in over two decades.

In the 2024-2025 academic year, 81.2% of New York City students, amounting to 58,660 individuals, successfully graduated. This marks a decrease from the previous year’s rate of 83.3%, representing 57,353 students.

This significant drop is the largest since the 2004-2005 school year, which saw a 1.1% decrease in graduation rates from the year before.

The results come as the city is facing an enrollment crisis. Schools saw the steepest decline in enrollment in four years, shedding 22,000 students the 2025-2026 school year, according to preliminary DOE data.

Though NYC students have made gains in their standardized test scores, nearly 40% still failed reading and math, according to DOE data.
