NYC dad who shook 3-month-old daughter to death learns fate at sentencing

A man who fatally shook his 3-month-old daughter and abandoned her body in littered woods near Yankee Stadium was sentenced to seven years in prison on Wednesday. The grieving grandfather of the baby expressed that she is constantly on his mind.

Damion Comager, aged 26, received his sentence from Bronx Supreme Court Justice Audrey Stone for charges of first-degree manslaughter and concealing a human corpse in the tragic death of his baby girl, Genevieve, in May 2023.

In addition to the seven-year prison term, Comager will undergo five years of supervised release after serving his sentence, as announced by District Attorney Darcel Clark in a statement.

He pleaded guilty to the charges on Aug. 15, according to authorities.

Between May 10 and May 16, 2023, Comager violently shook Genevieve to stop her constant crying while they were in a homeless shelter located in Highbridge, where they resided with the baby’s mother, Ivana Paolozzi, according to prosecutors.

Both Comager and Paolozzi subsequently dressed Genevieve in clothes, placed her in a stroller, and left her bagged remains in a forested area along the Major Deegan Expressway, according to authorities.

The couple was apprehended on May 29, 2023, after Comager reportedly admitted the crime to his father, who then notified the police, prompting a search that eventually uncovered Genevieve’s body.

Charges against Paolozzi of tampering with physical evidence, concealment of a human corpse, and second-degree obstructing governmental administration are still pending, the DA’s office said.

She was previously released with monitoring at her arraignment.

At the time, Paolozzi was considered a “significant flight risk” due to her holding a Swiss passport while in the US with an expired visa status.

The charges against her were not considered eligible for bail under the state’s controversial 2019 criminal justice reforms.

“In a shocking display of cruelty, this defendant took the life of his 3-month-old daughter Genevieve and then showed a lack of humanity by leaving the infant’s body in a garbage-ridden place. This sentence brings justice for an innocent life taken so soon,” Clark said in a statement after the sentencing.

Damion’s father, Donald Comager, told The Post that he is “grateful” his son still has a chance to get his life together, but still thinks about baby Genevieve “all the time.”

“It just makes me kind of grateful that he still has a chance to get his life together and come home. Seven years is better than life in prison.” Donald Comager said, noting he hasn’t spoken to his son since he went to jail.

“I worry about him all the time,” he said.

The grieving grandfather is holding onto Genevieve’s remains.

“I got her remains with me … I think about her all the time.”

He also expressed frustration that Paolozzi has not yet been officially charged.

“Why didn’t she go to prison, too. That’s crazy that she wasn’t charged,” Donald Comager said.

“I haven’t talked to her since my son has been to jail. I don’t know nothing about her.”

Damion Comager, of Louisiana, met Paolozzi, who is from Switzerland, while traveling in Europe, Comager’s parents previously told the Post.

The couple moved to New York in December, three months before welcoming Genevieve into their family, according to Comager’s parents.

Comager struggled with mental illness and was diagnosed bipolar and schizophrenic as a child, his dad said.

He had several prior arrests in the Pelican State on assault, domestic violence, and criminal impersonation charges dating to 2021, according to NYPD sources.
