A New Jersey inmate convicted of attempted murder is on the lam after he escaped custody just a few months ahead of his scheduled release date, authorities said.

Edward Berbon, 54, was on work detail when he escaped custody in Mount Laurel Township on Tuesday, the Mount Laurel Police Department announced.

Berbon was assigned to a halfway house at the time, and was scheduled for release on Feb. 12, 2024, the department continued.

The New Jersey Department of Corrections and the Mount Laurel police did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for a comment on the search.

Berbon – who is described as a 6-foot tall man with blue eyes and weighs 250 pounds – has been in custody since Sept. 14, 2004, when he was arrested for an attempted murder charge stemming from an incident on July 21 that year, his DOC records show.

He was formally sentenced to up to 22 years behind bars in June 2005.

Prior to his latest sentence, Berbon was in prison from May 2002 to April 2004 for robbery, theft and unlawful taking.

On the same day of the attempted murder episode, he was also due to be sentenced on an additional robbery count.
