NYC Ferry to tweak routes, landings as part of system redesign

NYC Ferry is set to unveil a revamped route map that will introduce a connection between Staten Island and Brooklyn and extend the southern Brooklyn line to Manhattan. This overhaul also includes plans to expand ferry services to East Harlem.

Initially proposed over the summer, these route modifications are slated to be implemented on December 8.

The updated map will merge the Soundview and Rockaway routes, allowing for a seamless ferry ride from Rockaway to Throgs Neck without any transfers.

In a significant change, the St. George route, which currently links Manhattan’s West Side to Staten Island, will now be extended to Brooklyn, concluding at Wall Street.

The southern Brooklyn route will shift northward under the new map, incorporating a stop at the East 34th Street landing in Midtown Manhattan. However, it will no longer serve Sunset Park and Bay Ridge on this route. As a temporary measure, NYC Ferry plans to reinstate service to these southernmost stops on summer weekends beginning in 2026.

To accommodate peak travel periods, the East River route will be divided into two segments, offering a skip-stop service along the Brooklyn and Queens sides of the river. During weekday middays and winter weekends, “local” ferries will continue to service all stops along the East River route.

During peak travel times, the East River route will be split into two, effectively running skip-stop service up the Brooklyn and Queens side of the river. During midday on weekdays and on winter weekends, “local” ferries will serve all East River route stops.

In addition to the ferry service reroute, NYC Economic Development Corp. — which controls the ferry network and contracts out its operations — announced it plans to open two new ferry landings, one in East Harlem at 125th St. and another in Sunset Park near Pier 6, north of the neighborhood’s existing landing. EDC is also working to expand the E. 34th St. landing in Midtown.
