A brutal assailant mercilessly struck a 44-year-old man in the head inside his Bronx home, abandoning him to die, authorities reported Monday.

Police revealed that Richard Vasquez, aged 37, assaulted Joel Rivera at approximately 7 p.m. on January 21 within his apartment located on Nereid Avenue, close to Bronx Boulevard in Wakefield. This area is known for its supportive housing for veterans.

Rivera, who endured severe head trauma, was immediately transported to Jacobi Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, he remained in critical condition for nearly a week before passing away, officials stated.

The city’s medical examiner’s office subsequently classified Rivera’s death as a homicide, according to law enforcement.

Vasquez was taken into custody on February 14, facing charges of murder, as confirmed by the authorities.

Living just half a mile from the crime scene, the accused was denied bail during his arraignment at Bronx Criminal Court. He is scheduled for his next court appearance on March 16, based on information from the Department of Correction’s online records.

It remained unclear Monday what, if any, weapon was used in the deadly attack, and what motivated the violence.

Rivera is survived by his mom, sister, niece and nephew – as well as “his most precious treasure…his beloved dog, Scarlito, whom he spoiled endlessly and loved unconditionally,” according to his online obituary.

“Joel had a way of lighting up any room he entered, known for his infectious smile and playful, prank-loving spirit,” his loved ones wrote. “He lived life to the fullest, always on the edge of his seat, embracing each moment with enthusiasm and heart.”

“Joel loved to cook and never hesitated to share a plate of food with anyone—hospitality came naturally to him.”

Rivera was also an organ donor, his relatives said.
