The off-duty officer was flown to a hospital in Chicago, where he was later pronounced dead.

The individual involved has been named as 58-year-old Ronald T. Jones, according to the sheriff’s department. Jones had been employed at the Lake County Jail for nearly nine years.

“Jones is survived by two adult children. His colleagues fondly remember him as a kind and dedicated individual who carried out his responsibilities with outstanding professionalism,” Sheriff Martinez Jr. stated. “I extend my sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and everyone affected by his life and service.”
