He was also believed to be responsible for the murder of MIT Professor Nuno Loureiro, which occurred two days after the university shooting, on December 15.
However, the reaction of Providence officials following these events has sparked criticism. On Thursday, local authorities seemed to celebrate their efforts, and this sentiment was echoed during a basketball game the following day. Both the mayor of Providence and the police chief received applause, a gesture that many found to be tone-deaf given the circumstances. The public’s response to these actions was overwhelmingly negative.
Many members of the community were unhappy with what appeared to be a premature celebration by officials.
Crucially, it was John, a homeless man, who played a pivotal role in advancing the investigation, leaving officials otherwise at a standstill.
