LOS ANGELES — One of this year’s contenders for the Oscar in the documentary short category tackles the pressing issue of reproductive rights. The 30-minute film unfolds in the intense environment of an abortion clinic.
The film’s trailer features a poignant quote: “I rely heavily on my faith while I’m here because the devil is busy out there.”
Titled “The Devil Is Busy,” the documentary provides an eye-opening look into a women’s health center in Atlanta. The center is often besieged by protestors, creating a tense atmosphere for patients. Central to the narrative is Tracy, a steadfast employee dedicated to supporting the women seeking assistance at the clinic.
“Tracy is incredibly courageous and confident,” said Christalyn Hampton, the documentary’s director. “Her commitment to the safety and well-being of the women, staff, and visitors is unwavering. We aimed to humanize what is often seen as a controversial topic.”
Although Hampton has an extensive background in documentary production, this marks her debut as a co-director. Her work on this film has brought her to the Oscars, highlighting the critical issue of women’s health care. She reflects on the current state of health care, remarking that despite the year, it doesn’t always feel like 2026.
“It certainly doesn’t,” Hampton observed. “I’m determined to push boundaries and explore new storytelling methods. My journey moving forward is to uncover and share stories that resonate with people and speak truth to power.”
If you’d like to watch “The Devil Is Busy” before Oscar Sunday, you’ll find it on HBO Max.
