Republican voters believe Pete Hegseth and Mike Waltz should both resign over the leaked attack plans scandal that has rocked Donald Trump’s White House, an exclusive DailyMail.com poll shows.

It comes after a journalist was accidentally included on a group chat among senior national security figures discussing an imminent U.S. bombing raid on a Houthi terrorist leader in Yemen.

Waltz, Trump’s National Security Advisor, inadvertently invited the journalist – Jeffrey Goldberg, editor of The Atlantic magazine – into the chat on the encrypted commercial app Signal.

Hegseth, the Defense Secretary, then revealed precise timings and weapons packages that were going to be used in the raid.

The attack was carried out on March 15 and was successful.

However, this week Goldberg revealed the full exchanges, which included comments from Vice President JD Vance, sending shockwaves through Washington.

Trump has backed the embattled Hegseth and Waltz after the bombshell revelation, saying he still has confidence in his national security team.

But a poll by J.L. Partners for DailyMail.com reveals that a majority of Americans think Hegseth should fall on his sword.

It found 54 percent thought the Pentagon chief should resign, while 22 percent backed him to stay, and 24 percent were not sure.

Crucially, 38 percent of Republicans said Hegseth should go, with only 33 percent saying he should stay in the job. The rest said they did not know.

A majority of Independents – 54 percent – also said he should resign, while 20 percent said he should not.

Among Americans aged over 65 from all parties 83 percent said Hegseth should resign.

Meanwhile, 47 percent of voters in the poll said Waltz should hand in his resignation, with only 21 percent backing the National Security Advisor.

Republicans narrowly agreed, with 33 percent saying Waltz should go, and 32 percent saying he should stay.

The results of the J.L. Partners poll will make for concerning reading in the White House as officials ride out the storm.

They have maintained that no classified information was divulged in the group chat.

When asked, voters said that the leak was by far the biggest news story of the week, despite efforts from the Trump administration to downplay it.

Words such as ‘leaked’, ‘war’, ‘security’, and ‘chat’ came up when respondents were asked which scandal they took the most notice of over the last seven days.

‘The Signal drama seems to have cut past the usual battle lines, and the public think it a sackable offence regardless of their politics,’ J.L. Partners co-founder James Johnson told DailyMail.com

White House officials have also highlighted that the mission in Yemen, under Hegseth’s leadership, was an unequivocal triumph.

In a blistering response to calls for his resignation earlier this week, Hegseth wrote on social media: ‘So, let me get this straight. The Atlantic released the so-called “war plans” and those “plans” include: No names. No targets. No locations. No units. No routes. No sources. No methods. And no classified information. Those are some really sh***y war plans.’

On Wednesday, Trump said: ‘Hegseth is doing a great job, he had nothing to do with this. How do you bring Hegseth into this?’

The president has also backed Waltz but said his National Security Advisor was responsible for the journalist being in the group chat.

Trump said: ‘Mike Waltz, he claimed responsibility, I would imagine. It had nothing to do with anyone else. It was Mike, I guess, I don’t know, I was told it was Mike.’

He added: ‘There was no harm done because the attack was unbelievably successful that night.’

In the chat Hegseth, a former Fox News journalist, shared details including when F-18s would launch a ‘first strike package’, the type of MQ-9 drones that would be deployed, and the exact moment ‘the first bombs will definitely drop.’

Democrats have accused the Pentagon chief of putting the lives of American troops in danger.

But Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe denied before Congress that any secret material was shared on the Signal chat, on which they were included.

There have been growing rumblings among Republicans in Congress over the affair.

Republican senator Kevin Cramer, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said: ‘It’s the first strike in the early stages of an administration. I don’t know how many strikes you get. In baseball, you get three. Maybe this is worth two.’

Meanwhile, Hegseth revealed a never-seen-before Arabic script tattoo on his arm.

He posted an image of himself doing jumping jacks and push-ups with Navy Seals at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii.

The tattoo features the Arabic word ‘kafir,’ which in the Quran means ‘disbeliever’ or ‘infidel.’
