VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Leo XIV has urged the United States to engage in “profound contemplation” regarding the conditions faced by migrants in detention facilities. He emphasized that numerous individuals, who have lived peacefully for many years, are now significantly impacted by the current situation.

Speaking with journalists Tuesday at Castel Gandolfo, the pope, originally from Chicago, addressed various pressing geopolitical issues. These included the spiritual rights of U.S. detainees, military operations targeting alleged drug traffickers near Venezuela, and the delicate ceasefire in the Middle East.

Leo highlighted a biblical principle, reminding that at the world’s end, the pivotal question will be: “Did you welcome the stranger?” He stressed the importance of reflecting deeply on the present circumstances.

He further advocated for the consideration of the spiritual rights of detained individuals, urging authorities to grant pastoral workers access to these migrants. “Often separated from their families, their spiritual needs remain unmet,” Leo remarked.

In a prior engagement, Leo had encouraged labor union leaders from Chicago to support immigrants and incorporate minorities into their communities.

Regarding the military strikes on suspected drug traffickers near Venezuela, the pope expressed concern, noting that such actions are “escalating tensions” and edging ever closer to the coastline.

“The thing is to seek dialogue,’’ the pope said.

On the Middle East, Leo acknowledged that the first phase of the peace accord between Israel and Hamas remains “very fragile,’’ and said that the parties need to find a way forward on future governance “and how you can guarantee the rights of all peoples.’’

Asked about Israeli settler attacks on Palestinians i n the West Bank, the pope described the settlement issue as “complex,’’ adding: “Israel has said one thing, then it’s done another sometimes. We need to try to work together for justice for all peoples.’’

Pope Leo will receive Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the Vatican on Thursday. At the end of November he will make his first trip as Pope to Turkey and Lebanon.
