Thousands in Wheaton, Carol Stream, Winfield and Hanover Park without power after communication tower falls on power lines: ComEd

CAROL STREAM, Ill. (WLS) — Thousands in the west suburbs were without power Friday after a communication tower fell on some power lines, ComEd said.

The tower collapsed near Schmale and St. Charles roads in Carol Stream at around 11 a.m., leaving over 25,000 customers in Wheaton, Carol Stream, Winfield, and Hanover Park without electricity, according to a spokesperson.

ComEd said power has since been restored for the affected customers.

“We are committed to providing safe, reliable energy to all customers, and will work until all affected customers are back in service,” ComEd said.

Friday is a sweltering day, with highs in the 90s and heat index values approaching 100 degrees.

Carol Stream provided locations for cooling centers and guidance on staying cool:
– Fountain View Recreation Center, 910 N. Gary Ave., open until 10 p.m.
– Outreach Community Center, 345 S. President St., open until 6 p.m.
– Carol Stream Village Hall, 500 N. Gary Ave., open until 10 p.m.
– Carol Stream Public Library, 616 Hiawatha Drive, open until 6 p.m.

– Keep blinds and curtains closed to block sunlight.
– Stay on the lowest floor of your home, where it’s cooler.
– Dress in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
– Hydrate often and avoid alcoholic or caffeinated drinks.
– Use battery-powered fans when possible.
