JOHNSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A man on trial for shooting and wounding a Johnson County deputy may face a life sentence without the possibility of parole, as announced by prosecutors.

Joey Ponce was arrested after allegedly shooting and injuring a deputy during a pursuit in April.

Ponce was also struck by gunfire when deputies reportedly returned fire.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in May, Ponce is facing charges that include two counts of attempted first-degree murder, fleeing arrest, using a firearm during a serious crime, and having stolen property.

The district attorney’s office conveyed to News Channel 11 on Monday that they had filed a notice of intent, a legal requirement when prosecutors aim to pursue either the death penalty or a life sentence without parole.

The State of Tennessee is seeking a sentence of life in prison without parole for Ponce for the first-degree attempted murder.
