'Erratic fire behavior': 30-acre Putnam County wildfire now 90% contained

A wildfire spanning 30 acres reached 90% containment by Thursday evening, after it posed a threat to 25 homes located near East Bannerville Road, just north of Bardin.

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Forest Service (FFS) announced that on Thursday, they dispatched several teams, working alongside Putnam County Fire Rescue, to tackle the 30-acre blaze.

The wildfire, referred to as the East Bannerville Fire, displayed unpredictable behavior, with embers igniting ahead of the main fire and endangering 25 residences in the vicinity.

Fortunately, wildland firefighters swiftly managed to control these spot fires and successfully established containment lines around the blaze. The FFS confirmed that no homes suffered damage and are currently out of danger.

Those living in or traveling through the area should anticipate smoky conditions. Authorities have requested the installation of smoke warning signs along State Road 100, both westbound and northbound at County Road 309C, as well as eastbound and southbound near Q.I. Roberts School and Holloway Road.

The FFS reported that by Thursday evening, the fire had been 90% contained.

Unincorporated Putnam County is under a burn ban through at least Feb. 17 due to continued dry conditions and elevated wildfire risk. No open burning is allowed.
