A gigantic great white shark, the largest to be tagged in the Atlantic Ocean by a marine research team, is making its way northward near a popular summer locale.
Named “Contender” after a famous boat brand, the shark was tracked recently several dozen miles off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. This island, situated about 100 miles south of Boston and 30 miles from Cape Cod, is a favorite tourist destination.
As reported by OCEARCH, a nonprofit organization dedicated to global shark tracking, this adult male shark measures nearly 14 feet long and has an estimated weight of 1,653 pounds.

In June, Contender was detected again, this time near Cape Hatteras, off the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
According to OCEARCH, great white sharks like Contender migrate northward in spring and early summer in search of cooler, prey-rich waters.
