LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Renowned actor Robert Carradine, celebrated for his performances in “Revenge of the Nerds” and “Lizzie McGuire,” has passed away at 71.

According to a statement given to Deadline by his family, Carradine struggled with bipolar disorder for nearly twenty years, a battle that ultimately led to his passing.

“We hope his journey will illuminate and inspire efforts to overcome the stigma surrounding mental health issues,” the Carradine family expressed.

Robert hailed from the illustrious Carradine family, rooted deeply in the entertainment industry. He was the son of actor John Carradine and shared his lineage with siblings David, Keith, and Christopher Carradine, the latter of whom was once a vice president at Walt Disney Imagineering.

To many younger viewers, Carradine is best recognized for his role as Hilary Duff’s father on the hit show “Lizzie McGuire.”

“This loss is profound. It’s challenging to accept this truth about a cherished friend,” Duff shared on Instagram. “The warmth of the McGuire family was genuine, and I always felt truly cared for by my on-screen parents. For that, I am eternally thankful. Learning about Bobby’s suffering is heart-wrenching. My condolences go to his family and all who loved him.”

Carradine had a long career in television and film. He played Lewis in the long-running “Revenge of the Nerds” movie franchise, and also appeared in the Oscar-winning film “Coming Home” in 1978.
