Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. has a heavy lift in his crusade to ‘Make America Healthy Again.’

The HHS secretary paid a visit to West Virginia to tout a law banning certain food dyes in the state on Friday.

But Kennedy turned heads when he fat shamed the state’s Republican governor and suggested monthly weigh-ins.

President Donald Trump’s top health official singled out Governor Patrick Morrisey after the West Virginia leader introduced him at the event. 

Kennedy was explaining how he got to know Morrisey early in the Trump transition when both of them were staying down in Palm Beach, Florida at the home of Dr. Mehmet Oz. 

‘I said to… Governor Morrisey the first time I saw him, I said “You look like you ate Governor Morrisey,”‘ Kennedy recalled with a laugh.

‘There was a lot of talk about getting healthy again, and I’m very happy that he’s invited me to be his personal trainer,’ the HHS secretary joked. 

The crowd could be heard laughing and applauding. 

‘I’m going to put him on a really rigorous regiment,’ Kennedy continued. ‘And we’re going to put him on a carnivore diet.’

 That’s when the U.S. top health official asked the crowd if they wanted Morrisey to do a ‘public weigh-in once a month.’

Kennedy said when the governor lost thirty pounds he would come back to the state to celebrate and do a public weigh-in with him.

‘You’re welcome,  Denise,’ Kennedy said referencing West Virginia’s first lady as the laughter continued. 

As the HHS secretary delivered his standup routine, the governor was seated just feet away the entire time. 

Morrisey was a good sport about the whole thing, saying ‘that may be a little more than I bargained for.’

Kennedy’s remarks came after the governor himself made his own jokes during his speech.

Morrisey acknowledged right before Kennedy spoke that he too could use more exercise.

 ‘I think all of us know the benefits of more exercise,’ he said. 

‘I have asked Secretary Kennedy to be my personal trainer,’ he said of the 70-year-old Trump Cabinet official and fitness fanatic, known for posting shirtless videos of him working out.

Morrisey even suggested Kennedy was sizing him up as a ‘major renovation project.’

While both men were willing to poke fun at the event, the focus of Kennedy’s visit was centered around a far more serious topic.

West Virginia has the highest obesity rate of any state in the U.S. which Kennedy noted in his speech.

The top health official also said the state pulled ahead of Mississippi as the one with the highest chronic disease rate in the country. 

On Friday, Morrisey announced a series of state health initiatives to promote healthy foods and exercise in the state.

As part of the effort to make West Virginia healthier, the state will ban certain food dyes from school lunches in the state.

The governor also signed a letter at the event seeking waivers to allow his state to eliminate soda from SNAP benefit eligibility, the program for low income Americans.

Kennedy said that the state would receive the waiver. 

Kennedy said he has been given free rein by the president in his effort to ‘Make American Healthy Again.’ 

But his visit to the Mountain State did not go without pushback as the HHS secretary continues to face criticism for his long history as a vaccine skeptic. 

While the top health official, who was the first Trump Cabinet member to visit the state in his second term, was inside, a group of demonstrators gathered outside to protest.
