Just hours before tragedy struck, Rob Reiner engaged in a conversation with comedian Eric Idle. The director and his wife were later found dead in their Los Angeles residence.
Idle, aged 82, shared insights into their last chat on Monday, soon after the grim news of the couple’s murder surfaced.
“Rob Reiner was truly a wonderful person. Our discussion lasted over an hour last night,” the “Monty Python” actor shared on X.
“I have always cherished his company. Our first meeting was at his father’s place in 1975,” Idle reminisced. “He spoke passionately about filming at Stonehenge and shared his visions for the future.”
Idle expressed his sorrow, adding, “This is heartbreakingly terrible. I will miss him dearly. He was intelligent, talented, and incredibly thoughtful. Such a tragedy.”
As reported by Deadline, Rob was collaborating on a “Fawlty Towers” revival with John Cleese, a fellow member of the Monty Python ensemble, at the time of the incident. Rob and Michele were poised to produce this venture.
On Sunday, Rob, 78, and Michele, 68, were found stabbed to death at their Brentwood, Calif. home.
The couple’s daughter Romy, 28, discovered their bodies.
After finding her parents with their throats slashed, Romy reportedly told cops that she believed a family member âshould be suspect” and that the relative was “dangerous.”
Their 32-year-old son Nick, who has a history of addiction and homelessness, was taken into custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriffâs Department on Sunday night, The Post confirmed.
Rob, famous for directing some of Hollywoodâs most beloved films like including âWhen Harry Met Sally,â âThe Princess Bride,” “This Is Spinal Tap” and “A Few Good Men,” married Michele, a photographer, in 1989.
The couple welcomed three children: Jake in 1991, Nick in 1993, and Romy in 1997.
Rob was also the adoptive father of actress Tracy Reiner, whom he shared with his first wife, director Penny Marshall, who died in 2018 at age 75.
Tracy spoke out about Rob and Michele’s murders, telling NBC News, “I came from the greatest family ever. I donât know what to say. Iâm in shock.â
Rob and Michele’s family also released a statement about the tragedy.
âIt is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,â the family told Variety. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Three months before Rob and Michele’s deaths, the Reiner family â including Nick â attended the Los Angeles premiere for Rob’s movie “Spinal Tap II: The End ContinuesâÂ
