Russian drone strikes destroy Ukraine maternity hospital full of newborns: 'This was pure terror'

In a devastating overnight assault, Russian drone attacks instilled “sheer terror” across Ukraine, targeting a maternity hospital and resulting in the deaths of four people, with over a dozen more injured.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Moscow unleashed more than 270 drones, mainly focusing on civilian infrastructure in the city of Odesa.

The southern port city of Odesa endured a barrage of over 60 drones, with a child among the wounded, according to Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky.

“This act had no military objective – it was a blatant act of terror against innocent civilians,” Zelensky remarked, emphasizing that each assault underscores Russia’s unwillingness to pursue peace in a conflict that has persisted for more than four years.

The explosion tore through the maternity hospital’s roof, damaging connecting structures between floors and numerous wards.

Heroic efforts by medical staff saved the lives of 22 newborns, including twins who required ventilator support, as well as 32 other patients who were relocated from the Odesa hospital to a secure shelter, stated Ihor Shpak, the hospital’s chief doctor.

Two were killed, and at least 13 wounded in the strikes on Odesa, military administration chief Sergiy Lysak said.

Images posted by Zelensky on Telegram show Ukrainian firefighters trying to extinguish blazes in bombed-out residential buildings surrounded by rubble and debris from broken windows.

A Russian strike on Ukrainian gas production facilities killed a 55-year-old energy worker, energy company Naftogaz said.

A 28-year-old man was also killed in a Russian strike on a residential building in the city of Kryvyi Rih.
