Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac dream big as "Welcome to Wrexham" season five is set to premiere

In 2021, as Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds finalized their acquisition of Wrexham AFC, commonly known as the Red Dragons, Reynolds was asked about his ideal storyline if this venture were a Hollywood film. His response was telling.

“Oh boy. I’d be lying if it wasn’t about reaching the Premier League or something of that nature,” he admitted.

“Why not dream big?” MacElhenney chimed in, echoing the sentiment.

The first four seasons of “Welcome to Wrexham” chronicled their journey as the dreams of these Hollywood stars for Wrexham, the world’s third-oldest football club, steadily unfolded.

The team etched their names in history, achieving successive promotions within the English Football League. Now, in the fifth season, their sights are set on the pinnacle of English football: the Premier League.

The trailer for the fifth season of this Emmy-winning series showcases MacElhenney and Reynolds grappling with the realities of new players, mounting pressures, and financial challenges, all while staying true to their roots and origins.

We will also see the Wrexham women’s team as they battle to land atop the Welsh Adran Premier League.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have big dreams and new pressures as they try to get their soccer team to the top of the English Football League. “Welcome to Wrexham” season five premieres May 14 on FXX, Hulu and Disney+.

“Welcome to Wrexham” has won ten Emmys in its first four seasons, including Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. The show mixes humor, heart and the suspense of sport as it highlights the football team, the fans who love it and the town that makes it all possible. It’s been renewed through its eighth season.

Reynolds and Mac attended an Emmys “For Your Consideration” event in Los Angeles and told On The Red Carpet that the success of the show is due to the people of Wrexham and the documentary team that has become like family as they capture every moment.

“What I find incredibly gratifying is once they’re embedded in Wrexham, they fall so deeply in love that it’s so hard to pull them back out, Reynolds said of his documentary team. “We’ve earned the trust of the town and the reward of that are that people are incredibly forthcoming when it comes to the doc. they really share their hearts and their stories in a vulnerable way because they know the story will be told responsibly and they know we’re here to listen and share their stories.”

“I feel a profound responsibility to the town and to the club to be honest, to point a spotlight and a camera in their direction,” added Mac. “It’s been a great honor for us and to be awarded in the way that we have is incredible but it’s not us, it’s the doc team and the members of that town that open themselves up.”

“Welcome to Wrexham” premieres May 14 with the first two episodes of season five airing on FXX and Hulu at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and on Disney+ internationally. New episodes will drop weekly.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of FX, Hulu and this ABC station.
