SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Surfers in Santa Cruz, California, are being advised to stay alert for an unusual threat: a surfboard-stealing sea otter.
A surfer at Steamer Lane reported an unexpected encounter on Tuesday evening when a sea otter bit her foot and then commandeered her surfboard for approximately 20 minutes, prompting a swift response from rescuers.
Isabella Orduna was paddling out when she felt a sudden “nip” at her foot. Surprised, she slipped off her board and turned around to find an otter comfortably settled on it.
After the initial bite, Orduna watched as the otter took control of her board, leaving her unsure of how to handle the situation for a considerable time.

Fortunately, another surfer nearby assisted Orduna in calling for help, ensuring a quick resolution to her unexpected adventure.
A full blown rescue ensued.
When first responders arrived, they found the surfer in the water and the otter lounging on her board.

Lifeguards eventually got her surfboard back.
For the past two summers, the notorious “Otter 841” went on a surfboard stealing spree in Santa Cruz.
It’s not clear if this thief is the same otter or just a copycat as the tracker that was originally on “Otter 841” is no longer on her and there is no current way to confirm her identity.
