American woman missing after husband says she fell overboard on Bahamas boat trip

Authorities are currently searching for an American woman who disappeared after falling overboard during a boating excursion in the Bahamas. The incident has sparked a desperate search, as strong currents reportedly carried her away, according to official reports.

The couple, both U.S. citizens, set out on a journey from Hope Town to Elbow Cay in a small 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. This 2.5-mile trip, which should have been routine, turned perilous, as detailed by the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

According to the police, in the midst of the journey, the woman fell overboard, taking with her the boat’s keys, which inadvertently caused the engine to stop. The situation quickly escalated as powerful currents swept her further into the sea, making it impossible for her husband to maintain sight of her amid the turbulent waters.

In a desperate attempt to get help, the husband paddled the powerless dinghy back to shore. He reached Marsh Harbour Boat Yard by around 4 a.m. on Sunday, where he recounted the tragic events to someone onshore. This individual promptly notified the police, setting the search and rescue efforts into motion.

The husband said he lost sight of his wife during the rough surf and paddled the small boat back to shore, eventually arriving at Marsh Harbour Boat Yard around 4 a.m. on Sunday — where he informed an individual of the harrowing ordeal.

That person then told police about the incident, authorities said.

Police on the island of Abaco, the Royal Bahamas Defense Force, and Hope Town Fire and Rescue have since launched an all-out search to find the missing American woman.

The Bahamas is currently under a US State Department Level 2 travel advisory, with officials urging Americans to exercise “increased caution” while traveling in the area over concerns about crime, boating, beach safety, and weapons.

“Boating is not well-regulated. Injuries and deaths have occurred,” one alert warned.

An investigation into the woman’s disappearance is ongoing. Police have urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact authorities with relevant details.
