During Monday’s episode of MS NOW’s “Morning Joe,” Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) addressed concerns regarding the funding of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He emphasized that while long-term financial support is uncertain, the department currently possesses the necessary resources to operate effectively.
Co-host Jonathan Lemire brought up a Republican talking point from the weekend, suggesting that the lack of DHS funding could increase the risk of certain events. He asked Blumenthal to clarify the situation.
Senator Blumenthal responded by clarifying that the DHS is, in fact, funded. He noted that the Senate had unanimously approved funding for the department twice. Despite political turmoil in the House, the security agencies have the financial means to fulfill their responsibilities. However, he pointed out that specific agencies, particularly ICE and CBP, are not receiving formal funding. Blumenthal argued that these agencies require significant reform due to past actions that have been deemed violent and reckless towards both immigrants and American citizens. He reiterated that while DHS funding is secure for now, future support hinges on reforms within these agencies.
