During a press conference at the Capitol, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized their commitment to a straightforward continuing resolution. This approach avoids entering into talks with Democrats on health care while the government remains closed. Johnson mentioned that the seven-week funding extension approved by the House aims to allow ample time for discussions with Democrats on long-term budget plans and health care objectives.

“At some point, reason, good sense, common sense, has to take effect here,” Thune said.

Johnson noted that while the president does not enjoy the government shutdown, he is taking the opportunity to tease the Democrats in the interim.

“Do they derive satisfaction from it? Certainly not,” Johnson commented regarding the government’s halted operations and forecasted financial reductions. “Is the president engaging in some light-hearted mockery? Absolutely. President Trump is known for that, and it’s providing amusement to some. However, the choices to be made are indeed challenging.”

Johnson shared that he had an in-depth conversation with Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought, who also feels regret over the job losses affecting federal workers.

“The president doesn’t find enjoyment in this,” Johnson remarked about the looming layoffs and budget slashes. “Yet, if Chuck Schumer allows President Trump the chance to dictate the terms, Trump will indeed seize it, and that’s our current reality.”

Johnson was asked how the president could be both taking no pleasure in federal cuts and “having fun” with the shutdown situation.

“The impact is profoundly serious for everyday Americans,” Johnson stated. “We appreciate the work of federal employees in various roles. However, the intention is not to amuse but to spotlight the irrationality of the Democrats’ stance, leveraging memes and social media tools. While some may find this humorous, ultimately, the decisions are significant and bring no joy,” he concluded.
