Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut recently visited Barcelona, Spain, where he urged progressive parties worldwide to come together. During his speech, he drew parallels between President Donald Trump and a global network of right-wing movements. Notably, Alex Soros was present at the gathering, highlighting that the summit attracted participation from thousands of delegates representing over 100 countries and organizations.
Murphy wrote on X: “I am in Barcelona today to help unite progressive parties from around the world in a defense of democracy and a war against corruption. A first of its kind event. Necessary to beat back the forces of fascism.”
In his address, Murphy emphasized the need for global progressive unity, especially in light of recent political developments.
His comments followed the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s recent electoral defeat to opposition leader Péter Magyar. This outcome garnered praise from prominent figures such as former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Orbán, known for his staunch stance against open borders and mass migration, and his pro-family policies, had faced criticism for his government’s legislation restricting LGBT content in children’s programming and prohibiting Pride parades. Critics often accused him of authoritarian tendencies.
The Barcelona summit also saw the involvement of Alex Soros, son of the renowned billionaire activist George Soros and chairman of the Open Society Foundations. Soros expressed his pride in hosting the event, sharing on social media that it was an “honor to welcome so many incredible leaders and advocates” to the summit.
Senator Murphy has frequently criticized Trump and his administration. In March 2025, he asserted on CNN that the “White House has become an arm of the Kremlin,” suggesting that Trump sought to align the United States with authoritarian regimes. By January 2026, Murphy accused Trump of waging a “war on people who aren’t white, who have accents, who come from a different place.” Earlier in 2024, Murphy had criticized Trump’s foreign policy as “corrupt” and expressed disappointment in the Democrats for not sufficiently supporting “undocumented Americans” in the country.
Murphy has leveled similar attacks on Trump and his administration. In March 2025, Murphy claimed on CNN that “the White House has become an arm of the Kremlin,” adding that Trump wanted America “to align itself with dictators.” In January 2026, Murphy said Trump “wants to wage a war on people who aren’t white, who have accents, who come from a different place.” Earlier that same month, Murphy declared that “Donald Trump’s entire foreign policy is corrupt.” Murphy stated in 2024 that Democrats had failed to deliver for “the people we care about most, the undocumented Americans that are in this country.”
