Several sharks were spotted in New York City waters on the Fourth of July, prompting the city to close a temporary a stretch of beach in Queens.

Video shared on social media shows a sharks swimming close to beachgoers in Far Rockaway, Queens.

Around 11:30 a.m., the creatures were observed near Beach 32nd Street. Additional sightings occurred at Beach 144th Street and Beach 30th Street, according to Kaz Daughtry, the deputy mayor for public safety, as mentioned on X.

“Our Long Island State Park beaches are beloved by both New Yorkers and visitors — ideal locations to disconnect, enjoy nature, and spend time outdoors,” Gov. Kathy Hochul stated on Wednesday.

“We are continuously enhancing our shark monitoring and safety measures at these beaches to preserve these valued summer activities,” she added. “I urge all beach visitors to stay vigilant, remain aware, and always heed the instructions of lifeguards and park personnel.”

New York State Parks Commissioner Pro Tem Randy Simons said his agency was well-prepared to keep beachgoers safe.

“Our staff is well prepared to safeguard beachgoers this summer season, and we’re excited to adopt the latest technology to be even more effective,” he said. “I encourage beachgoers to follow guidance and directions from parks staff and be shark smart while enjoying their summer fun.”
