Despite the alarming nature of the event, the truck driver was fortunate to escape with only minor injuries. The Phillipsburg Police Department reported that he received immediate attention from emergency medical personnel at the scene.

Meanwhile, another vehicle was not spared as it sank into a separate sinkhole roughly 30 feet away. However, according to reports from WFMZ, that car has since been successfully extricated from the hole.

Some 30 feet down the street, a car sank into a second sinkhole.

That car has been removed, according to WFMZ.

Aqua NJ officials told WFMZ they have to wait until the dump truck is removed from the sinkhole before they can repair the water main. 

The fissures opened up on Summit Avenue near the intersection with Lewis Street, prompting the Town of Phillipsburg to issue a local state of emergency by Tuesday afternoon.

Drivers and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area until its deemed safe.
